Clynelish Distillery - History
Brora, Sutherland, Scotland The original distillery was built in 1819 by the future Duke of Sutherland of nearby Dunrobin Castle. The distillery was part of his scheme of economic improvement and provided a ready market for locally grown grain. In addition, Clynelish was fired with coal from the local mine and its by-products, valuable animal feeds, were used by livestock farmers. Their animals helped to fertilise unimproved land, which later grew grain which was used at the distillery - the cycle was complete. Such was the demand for its whisky that a larger distillery with commanding views across to the holiday town of Brora and the sea, was built in the grounds of Clynelish in the 1960's. The six new stills faithfully reproduced the design of those in the original distillery and ensured that the character of the whisky remained unchanged. Whisky from Clynelish is much sought after by blenders, but it also produces a 14-year-old single malt which is available locally. It's label bears the image of a wildcat - a local animal which is also featured on the Sutherland crest. |
